A spilt drink ended in brawl outside a Prestatyn hotel on Fireworks Night last year where a girl was headbutted by a man in a motorcycle helmet.
Trouble began when Christopher Walsh’s drink spilled accidentally on a young woman. When he told her it was because she was “too close” she poured a pint glass over his head.
Outside the Nant Hall hotel two groups clashed and Kenneth Granger, 24, head-butted the girl while wearing his motorcycle helmet and when she fell to the floor both men kicked and punched her.
The story was told by Matthew Dunford, prosecuting at Caernarfon crown court where Walsh and Granger, of Tan Lan, Ffynnongroyw, Holywell, pleaded guilty to affray and both received suspended sentences.
Jamie Baxter, defending Walsh, said Granger was his daughter’s partner. No weapon had been used and no significant injury caused. Walsh was employed as a paint sprayer.
Jonathan Austin, representing Granger, said: “He acknowledges it was an unpleasant incident outside licensed premises. It arose from nowhere, a drink having been spilled and words exchanged.”
Passing sentence, Judge Geraint Walters said Walsh played a lesser role and he was given an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with a community order to include a 10-session thinking skills course, with 100 hours of unpaid work.
Granger, who he said was beginning to develop a pattern of violence, was given a 14-month term suspended for two years, and a supervision requirement including a course in “consequential thinking”. He must serve a 8pm-6am curfew for three months.
Judge Walters warned him: “It’s make or break time.”
