A shocking street attack has left a police officer in hospital with a fractured leg.
The officer may have to undergo surgery after the attack, which took place at Ffordd y Mela, Pwllheli on Saturday afternoon.
Police had been responding to an incident on the street when the attack took place, just after 4.30pm.
A man was immediately arrested for the sickening assault on the policeman, who is remains in Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.
In an unrelated attack a second police officer was also assaulted in Menai Bridge late on Saturday night.
Assault was 'awful and shocking'
Acting Assistant Chief Constable Simon Shaw of North Wales Police described the Pwllheli incident as “awful” and “shocking”.
He told the Daily Post: “Police officers can and do get injured doing this job, it’s part of the risk and these are dangers that are associated with the job.
We'll do all we can to support the officer
“However the extent of this injury is worrying.
“It will have a significant impact on the officer as he will be going through a long and slow recovery.
“We will do all that we can to support the officer during this difficult time.
“It’s awful to see an attack like this which lead to such horrific injuries when officers are there doing their best to protect the public.”
The officer who was assaulted in Menai Bridge received treatment at Ysbyty Gwynedd after a blow to the head, but was discharged shortly after and is now “resting at home” according to a North Wales Police spokesman.
Mayor hits out at police attacker
Mr Shaw also condemned this assault: “The investigations continue in to both of these attacks, but I also want to highlight the policing success over what was a very busy weekend in terms of extensive operations across North Wales.
“I credit those who were assisting with difficult cases.
“There was a huge effort from police and public sector colleagues over the weekend, which has unfortunately been marred by the assaults on two of our officers.”
The Mayor of Pwllheli, Michael Sol Owen, has also expressed his disappointment regarding the attack.
He said: “It is very unfortunate that this attack happened, especially so close to Christmas.
“It shows a massive disrespect to our officers of the law.”
