Should the parent's not be investigated for failing to supervise their children correctly?
Headteacher of Ysgol Yr Hafod urges parents to be vigilant after man in his 50s tries to add children to his Instagram account in 'chilling' encounter
A headteacher has issued a warning to parents after a man sent a chilling message to a child saying he would “pick her up now”.
The acting head at Ysgol Yr Hafod, Johnstown, in Wrexham, raised concerns after a man in his 50s tried to add children to his photographic social media Instagram account.
And in a further disturbing move he messaged one child saying he would pick her up and take her to Chester.
A letter has been sent to parents and guardians warning them and highlighting children have to be aged at least 13 to access most social media sites including Instagram and Facebook.
It said: “It has been brought to my attention today that many of our children have their own Instagram accounts and a man in his late 50’s, with grey hair and a beard has tried to add some children.
“Chillingly, the man has messaged a pupil at our school and said he would pick her up and take her to Chester. He also commented he would ‘Pick her up now’.
This was brought to my attention by the parent today and as a result I have informed the police as well as Mr John Davies, head of education in Wrexham.
“We will continue to educate the children on internet safety however, if your child has access to a mobile phone, computer etc, could you please check the contents of them regularly and report anything suspicious.
“Please be aware most social media sites have an age restriction of 13+”.
The letter finishes saying ‘let’s work together to keep our children safe.
Wrexham council’ s head of education John Davies, said: “We are supporting the school in this matter and pleased that they are being proactive in protecting children from online dangers.”
In November schools in Chirk warned parents to be vigilant following the attempted abductions the previous month .
