A 21-year-old man, asked to leave a Prestatyn pub, returned wearing a balaclava and brandishing a large knife.
Kyle Crompton, of Lon Ceiriog, Prestatyn, said: "He’s having it" as he held the knife at The Jolly Sailor in the town.
The intended victim was hidden from sight but the victim’s father held a chair up to defend himself, said prosecuting barrister Ffion Tomos.
One witness said it was the biggest knife he had ever seen.
Crompton admitted making threats with a knife, an earlier public order offence and possessing some cannabis.
He was jailed for 28 months.
The judge, Mr Recorder Paul Hopkins QC, sitting at Mold Crown Court, watched a CCTV recording of the incident which took place in January.
“The facts have very much been brought to life before me,” he said.
He was at what was described as a family pub, there had been an issue with another man, the defendant became angry and was asked to leave when he refused to calm down.
“You quite deliberately armed yourself with a large kitchen knife and a balaclava,” he said.
If he was attempted to disguise his appearance it was unsophisticated because he was wearing the same clothing and it was plain to those at the public house who it was who had returned to the pub.
“You were plainly brandishing the knife in a very threatening manner,” he said.
“Anyone would have been extremely alarmed at your behaviour.”
The defendant had a number of previous convictions, he said.
“Sadly for a young man they paint a very troubling picture indeed,” he said.
Mark Harper, defending, said that since the incident the defendant had received a prison sentence at Bury Magistrates’ Court which he was currently serving.
The defendant had since splitting up with his girlfriend gone off the rails to an extent, he said.
Miss Tomos told that the defendant was arrested at his home address and both the balaclava and the knife were recovered.
