Cardiff,South Wales - A man tried to attack a customer at a florist's shop with a hammer

Customers and staff locked themselves in during the 'nightmare' experience

Staff at a Cardiff shop had to lock themselves inside when a man tried to attack a customer with a hammer.
A member of staff from Bettys Florists said a man wielding a hammer tried to get inside the shop on Cowbridge Road East on Monday at around 1.45pm.
The woman, who did not want to be named, said: “There was a customer in the shop and someone was personally looking to attack them.
"He approached the shop with a hammer.
South Wales Police said the investigation is ongoing
“We managed to wedge the door shut with our feet until we got the keys.
“When we locked the door he turned around and with the hammer smashed up a car outside. He thought it was the customer’s but it was mine.”
She added: “He put the rear windscreen window through but luckily the hammer came out of his hand and went into the car so he couldn’t cause any more destruction.
“He started shouting at the customer through the door and then he ran up the street.
“We then just kept the door locked for 30 minutes until the police turned up.
“We were shaking, it was awful. It was a nightmare.
“We lost four hours of our day and it was the busiest day of the year.
“I also had the inconvenience of my car being off the road and having to get a hire car.”
