The ratings are published on the Food Standards Agency's website
Three Cardiff restaurants inspected since the start of 2017 have been awarded “zero” food hygiene ratings telling them urgent improvements are necessary.
The trio – the Sultan Grill House in Canton, Van Loi in Rumney and Dragon Court in Leckwith – have all been given the lowest ranking on the six-grade “zero to five” scale since the start of January.
A fourth, Ely Fish Bar in Caerau, was initially given a zero rating but has since been regraded after making the improvements demanded of it.
Its updated grade will appear on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website in due course.
And as many as 13 other businesses in Cardiff which had inspections before January were still listed as having a zero rating on the Food Standards Agency website as of yesterday afternoon.
They included:
- Basilco, Adamsdown;
- Bobbys Baguettes & Lifestyle Express, Llandaff North;
- Bollywood Brasserie, Whitchurch;
- Cardiff Medical Centre Sports & Social Club, Heath;
- Cathays Fish & Chips, Cathays;
- CN, Roath; Falafel King, Adamsdown;
- Indo Cymru, Canton;
- Jalan Malaysia, Cathays;
- Kitchen Gallery, Gabalfa;
- Maryport Stores, Penylan;
- Spicy Hut, Roath.
Chicken Cottage on St Mary Street was also listed as having a zero rating but the FSA website noted it had been recently re-inspected and a “new rating [would] be published soon”.
Elsewhere in South Wales, three businesses in Rhondda Cynon Taff , two in the Vale of Glamorgan and one in Bridgend were also listed as having zero ratings, the FSA website said, although none resulted from inspections carried out so far in 2017.
Businesses are checked in three primary areas by food inspectors: how hygienic their food handling is; the cleanliness and condition of their facilities and buildings; and the systems they have in place to ensure food safety.
We attempted to contact the four Cardiff businesses which have been given zero ratings since the start of 2017.
Dragon Court’s management said they had only taken over the business this month – after the zero rating was given – and pointed out a restaurant they also run in Wandsworth, London, has a rating of four.
They added: “We are aware of the situation and we are actively working with Cardiff council [to improve it].”
Sultan Grill said they were waiting for a re-inspection, which they had asked for after hotly disputing the findings of the original inspection, saying they run one of the most hygienic eateries in Cardiff.
Ely Fish Bar said it had had an inspection last week and has been told it no longer requires improvement – and can take down the sticker which businesses are obliged to display to show customers what ranking they have been awarded.
There was no answer when we phoned Van Loi.
