CCTV is being used to try and catch those responsible for blighting alleyways between South Parade and Marine Road in Pensarn
CCTV cameras are being used to help catch people responsible for fly-tipping in a coastal town.
It is suspected that some of the material being dumped in Pensarn, Abergele, is being brought in by people from outside the immediate area.
The problem has become so serious a meeting is now being planned for residents, council officials, landlords, North Wales Police and social services to try to find a solution.
Councillor Alan Hunter, who represents Pensarn on both Abergele Town and Conwy County Borough Councils, said: “It is a horrendous situation, and although council workers come down very promptly and do a good job of clearing up when notified, the following day there is more rubbish there.”
The area of concern is the alleyways between South Parade and Marine Road, where most of the properties are in multiple occupation.
Over the last few years Conwy Council ’s waste and recycling teams have tried to tackle the problem, and recycling officer Alun Jones said a great deal of time had been spent trying to persuade residents, landlords and letting agencies to comply with the regulations.
He said the amount of bins was sufficient for the number of properties – a fact refuted by Cllr Hunter – and that refuse collections took place every two weeks.
Because of continual contamination of recycling bins some of them were replaced by additional refuse bins and building materials are also being dumped.
Mr Jones said the transient population often led to bulky items of furniture and electrical goods being dumped in the alleyways before being removed on a weekly basis by the council.
“A meeting of all concerned should be held as soon as possible,” he said in an email to Abergele Town Council. “We have, and are continuing to service this area at a level which is unsustainable and will require a sustained effort by all to address.”
Cllr Hunter, who was elected in a by-election in October, commented: “We really need a long-term solution as things can’t carry on as they are.”
