Wyn Roberts, now 66, was jailed for four and a half years over the sexual abuse of a young girl in the 1970s
A former policeman has been jailed for sexually abusing a young girl.
Wyn Roberts, now 66, repeatedly targeted the girl back in the 1970s, when he was in his 20s.
Outwardly a respectable man, Roberts had been living with a dark secret that today saw him sent to prison for four and a half years.
At his sentencing at Mold crown court, a statement from his victim was read out.
She spoke of how she had spent years believing the abuse was her own fault, but she eventually got up the courage to speak out.
The woman told how she had “carried the pain and hurt for nearly 40 years”.
Following counselling she felt strong enough to report what had occurred to the police and she felt a great weight had been taken off her shoulders.
“I wish I had done this a long time ago,” she said. “I wish I had not wasted so much of my life carrying the blame around, believing it was my fault.”
She described herself as a survivor who knew she had done the right thing.
Prosecutor Simon Parry told the court that Morris, of Albert Terrace in Denbigh, had told the victim at the time to tell no one what was happening and to keep it to herself.
Arrested in March of last year he denied the allegations in interview but then pleaded guilty in court.
Defending barrister Paulinus Barnes said that his client was a man of good character who had pleaded guilty and had done everything he could to spare the victim the ordeal of giving evidence about what he had done “all those years ago.”
Mr Barnes said that there were issues in the pre-sentence report about his client’s own background and upbringing, and the difficulties he had forming relationships in his younger life, which he asked the court to take into account.
He had not offended for many years and it was clearly not something which would be repeated.
His admissions came at a personal cost and he was now separated from his wife.
“All he can do is apologise for all the hurt he has caused”, Mr Barnes added.
The judge said that he took into account his guilty pleas, his age and remorse, ands told him: “You have some insight into the effect of your depravity as a much younger man.”
A prison sentence “was quite inevitable”, he said.
