The Eastern Origin on the Bangor High Street has been warned it needs to make major improvements by food safety offials
A popular Chinese restaurant, described as the “best in Bangor” by Tripadvisor reviewers has been warned it needs to make major improvements.
The Eastern Origin on Bangor High Street received a one hygiene rating out of a possible five when visited by food safety officials on January 5.
Owners of the restaurant which occupies the premises of the Railway Hotel, will need to make sweeping changes if it is to get a pass rating of three or above.
According to the Food Standards Agency, the restaurant needs to make major improvements to the management of food safety, which includes putting system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat and evidence that staff know about food safety.
Officials also raised concerns over its hygienic handling of food (including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage) and the cleanliness and condition of facilities (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control).
The concerns aside, 71 reviewers on review website Tripadvisor have rated the Easter Origin as excellent, with a maximum five out of five.
One reviewer who rated the restaurant in March last year even claimed it is “the best Chinese in Bangor”.
“I've been getting takeaways from here for years and cannot fault the quality and tastiness of the food here,” they wrote.
“The menu is vast and varied and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you get.
“Really is the best Chinese in the Bangor area.”
Another reviewer said their meal was “flawless”.
“Came here two times in one week; once with my boyfriend where we had banquet B which was amazing and once with my family as a birthday celebration.
FOOD HYGIENE RATINGS. WHAT'S BEHIND NUMBERS?
“Both times were flawless and I’d really recommend the banquets. Lovely staff too.”
However, a recent review posted on the travel website last week claims the restaurant was “terrible”.
“Was glad to be able to find restaurant open late on Saturday but the food was so terrible and bland that I couldn't even have a second bite,” they wrote.
“I don’t usually write reviews unless am very impressed or the opposite. My advice would be to avoid at all costs.”
It has received negative feedback from 17 reviewers, who rated it poor or terrible.
No one from the Easter Origin was available for comment when the Daily Post attempted to contact them a number of times during the week.
Gwynedd Council refused to release the full report to the Daily Post saying there may be an ongoing investigation.
