St Asaph, North Wales - A55 shut as suspected criminal seriously injured after reports of police chase

Police refer themselves to IPCC over incident

Police have just issued a statement confirming that officers were pursuing the vehicle before it crashed.
The driver has now been transferred to hospital in Stoke where he condition is described as serious.
North Wales Police have referred the matter to the IPCC as the vehicle was being pursued by officers prior to the collision.
Supt Jane Banham said: “Incidents of this nature are rare and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have seen the BMW convertible being driven along the A55 prior to the collision.”
Anyone with information relating to the collision is asked to call 10 quoting reference V022928.

Road fully reopened

All lanes have now been reopened on the A55 westbound between Junction 25 (Bodelwyddan) and Junction 24 (Abergele). The road had been closed following an incident.

Still closed

One lane is still closed following the incident westbound between Junction 25 and Junction 24. Lane one is closed but the traffic sensors suggest traffic is coping well with the situation at present.

Crash in Denbighshire

There’s been another crash on the A55 heading westbound which will cause some more problems.
One lane blocked and slow traffic due to accident on A55 Westbound between J30 (Travellers Inn) and J29 (Pant-y-dulath).

Recovery 'in progress'

It appears that recovery vehicles are on the scene to remove the car.

Traffic Wales have sent out another tweet now saying the road remains closed.

A55 driver seriously hurt in crash amid reports police chased him

A man was left seriously injured after his car plummeted off a bridge and down an embankment onto the A55 in a suspected police chase with armed officers. Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway near J24 for Abergele just before 11.50am today.
Several motorists have taken to the A55 Traffic, Incidents, Information Facebook page claiming that police with guns were pursuing the silver BMW when it crashed.

Road remains closed

Despite previous reports that the road has re-opened we are being told by motorists that it is still closed.

Reports that the road has now been cleared.

I’m told that the queues on the A547 diversion route are easing.

Police say that one lane will open A55 Westbound St George shortly, traffic is heavy so expect delays.

Reports of a police chase prior to crash

Police are refusing to confirm or deny at this stage if the car involved was being chased by officers before it crashed. There are several reports on social media that armed police were pursuing the vehicle at the time. I am told that a fuller statement will be made by police on the matter later today.

Police confirm 'serious incident'

Police have released a statement saying that they are at the scene of a “serious road traffic collision”. They warn the road is closed and that there will be delays for some time.

Man suffers serious injuires

A man has suffered serious injuries in the crash. The Welsh Ambulance Service sent “numerous” vehicles to the scene and have taken a man to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd with serious injuries.
A spokeswoman said: “We were called to a road traffic collision on the A55 involving a male at 11.48am. We sent numerous vehicles to the scene including a helicopter, rapid response vehicle and ambulance. We transported the male to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd with serious injuries.”

Holywell Town are advising their fans of the delays.

Car reported to be badly damaged

Witnesses say that the car is silver or white in colour. However it is difficult to know the make or model due to the damage sustained. No indication yet on injuries however an air ambulance has been at the scene.

Witnesses report police are 'everywhere'

Lots of concerned motorists have been posting on the A55 Traffic, Incidents, Information Facebook page about the incident. They say that there is a heavy police presence with officers “everywhere”. It’s also reported that the police helicopter is hovering above the scene.

Motorists are reporting that a man is trapped in the car which is on its side.

There is stop-start traffic due to the incident. The crash has happened between J24A and J24 however the road is closed at J27 to allow a suitable diversionary route.
