A MAN with more than 250 previous criminal convictions has been sent back to jail for stealing.
Nathan Carron had no money after being released from custody, a court was told.
Carron, 34, said he was desperate to stop the cycle of offending and ending up in custody.
But he was told that he was the only one who could do that and he was jailed for ten weeks at a special weekend sitting of Flintshire Magistrates’ Court at Mold.
Carron, who gave his address as Plas y Wern Bail Hostel at Ruabon, admitted three shoplifting offences – and breaching a criminal behaviour order.
He also admitted assaulting a detention officer at Wrexham police station in the execution of his duty by spitting towards him.
Magistrates said that his behaviour was unacceptable and that the public needed to be protected.
While he wanted to break his cycle of offending, the time to demonstrate that was on his release, they said.
Carron had 253 previous convictions recorded against him, said prosecutor Mairead Neeson.
The court heard how last Thursday afternoon he stole a jacket valued at £59 from The Outlet Store at Flintshire Retail Park in Flint.
Then, on the same day, he went to the One Stop Community Store in Connah’s Quay High Street where he stole cans of lager and a sandwich valued at £21.
That put him in breach of his two year criminal behaviour order.
Then on Friday afternoon he entered Iceland and stole meat valued at £20 – and he and a female with him were said to be abusive to staff who asked for the property to be returned.
Carron had pushed one member of staff to the neck before leaving.
He refused to come out of his cell at Wrexham police station, failed to provide a drugs test, and spat towards a detention officer and called him abusive names when the officer tried to persuade him to come out.
Defending solicitor Victoria Handley said her client had been released from custody on January 30 with £41 which was provided to him to last until he could claim benefits.
But that money did not last very long and unfortunately he had stolen items of a relatively low value, she explained.
The defendant had been involved with drugs since the age of 16.
She said the catalyst was the death of a friend in his arms.
He realised things could not go on as they were and he had been engaging with the probation service and the drugs intervention service.
Caron was keen to change and to break the cycle of offending, Miss Handley said.
She asked the court to “give him that opportunity” on this occasion.
