A man is being held on suspicion of attempted robbery following incidents at McColls in Rhosnesni Lane and Gresford Spar
A man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to execute two robberies at two shops in Wrexham .
Police arrested a 36-year-old man this morning following two attempted armed raids on McColls newsagents in Rhosnesni Lane and at the Spar on Chester Road in Gresford over the weekend.
The two attacks happened within 15 minutes of each other on Sunday February 12 with the first at McColls taking place at 7.50am.
It is understood that three men took part in the raid.
One is said to have been armed with a hammer, a second with a knife, while a third man stayed outside in a stolen red Fiat car.
The vehicle was later found abandoned at the Beeches Premier Inn on Chester Road.
Officers made the arrest amid a string of burglaries in the town.
DI Mark Hughes of North Wales Police said: “A 36-year-old male is currently in custody at Wrexham Police station helping police with enquiries.
“I would like to repeat our appeal to the public for any information about these offences on Sunday and the recent incidents in the Wrexham area where newsagents and off licences have been robbed.”
The two attacks bring the total number of raids on businesses in Wrexham over the past two weeks to seven.
In the latest a pharmacy was targeted last night.
The Rhostyllen Pharmacy on Trinity Close was raided by two men wearing hoodies and tracksuit bottoms at about 11.30pm.
Criminals smashed their way in through the front, stealing a till, before making off in a black Peugeot 206 driven by a third male offender.
The till, which had no cash in and other items from the pharmacy, were later recovered along the A5152 main road to Wrexham, police said.
Today store owner Gerald Thomas said staff were left upset by the break-in when it was discovered this morning.
“They had smashed their way in through the front and left a real mess. There was glass everywhere,” said Mr Thomas.
“Staff were upset when they came in because of the state of the place.”
Det Chief Insp Neil Harrison said: “We are not linking this burglary with recent robberies at newsagents in the Wrexham area at this time.”
Yesterday morning computers were discovered stolen from the Max Spielmann photography and printing store on Hope Street after robbers broke in through a back door.
And on February 5 armed raiders threatened staff and stole cash from Premier Stores on Victoria Road in Brynteg.
There was a similar armed robbery involving three men at Premier Stores in Gwersyllt on Friday, February 3.
Two days earlier thieves stole a till at Bargain Booze in Heol Celyn, Coedpoeth.
Police want anyone with information about any of the raids to contact them on 101
