Officers have met with farmers following a spate of incidents in south Gwynedd
Police are urging people living in rural communities to be extra vigilant after a spate of sheep rustling in south Gwynedd.
The North Wales force’s rural crime unit met around 50 farmers on Monday night following an increase in thefts of sheep and lambs over the last year in the Golan, Cwm Pennant and Cwmystradllyn areas of Dolbenmaen.
One of the farmers hit was Eifion Williams, who lost 23 Suffolk crosses and Mule ewes from his Hendre Hywel farm in Prenteg between August 1 and September 8 last year.
He said the rustled sheep were worth almost £3,000.
The meeting at the Ganolfan Golan near Garndolbenmaen was attended by police and representatives of farming unions.
PC Dewi Evans said: “We are advising that consideration is given to increased security around locks, gates and access routes.
"If anyone is uncertain about what they can do, contact the Rural Crime Team and we can arrange a crime prevention survey.
“It’s equally important to remain constantly vigilant for any suspicious people or vehicles and if any are sighted then phone police immediately.”
Officers will also now be making regular visits to livestock markets and abattoirs and will increase patrols, stopping and checking agricultural vehicles.
PC Evans added: “The key to this is intelligence and the most fruitful source can often be the victims of crime themselves.
"We are asking if you have any snippet of information, no matter how insignificant you think it is, please contact police.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
