The IPCC is investigating 'prior police contact' with man before he died from self-inflicted injuries
A probe into a death in Wrexham this morning will look at "prior police contact" with t he man who was killed.
A man in his 30s died in hospital after an "attempted suicide situation" in Ruabon Road, Johnstown at 10.19am today (February 12).
The man had suffered self-inflicted knife injuries, he was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead.
North Wales Police referred the i ncident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) because of prior police contact with the man before his suicide attempt.
After receiving notification from North Wales Police, IPCC investigators were deployed and an independent investigation was declared.
IPCC Commissioner Jan Williams said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the man who died following this tragic incident.
"We are in the initial stages of carrying out an investigation into the circumstances and the police interaction with the man.
"We have met with his relatives to explain our role and we will keep them updated throughout our inquiries."
A police officer suffered superficial injuries in the incident.
Superintendent Alex Goss said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the local community for their cooperation and patience, both during and after this incident.
"This matter is now being referred to the IPCC as is mandatory and standard procedure in these circumstances."
Exact details of what happened have not been released.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were asked to attend at 10.41am, but were later stood down.
Officers shut the B5605 Ruabon Road in both directions between Brandie Brook and Stryt Las for around six hours with diversions in place while they dealt with the incident and to allow investigation work to take place.
