These pictures show the horrific conditions at two farms which led to an illegal breeder being banned from keeping dogs for four years.
Richard Samuel Morgan Jones, of Ceredigion , was handed a nine-week jail term – suspended for 18 months – at Aberystwyth Justice Centre on Thursday.
Jones, 31, was previously found guilty of two counts of illegal dog breeding and 21 counts of causing unnecessary suffering to dogs in a prosecution brought by Ceredigion County Council .
The court previously heard how the dog breeder had showed a “total lack of care” for his dogs, subjecting them to “extreme unnecessary suffering” for a “considerable length of time”.
He was prosecuted after two raids by council and police officers at two farms near Lampeter in June last year.
The court previously heard how Jones, who denied any wrongdoing, did not have a licence for breeding at either address.
Ceredigion County Council officers who visited found some of the dogs in his care were found “in complete darkness” with “advanced chronic skin conditions” – with one young puppy so thin that it was “close to death”.
Council vet Dr John O’Connor documented the suffering of the animals in each of the 21 charges.
Among them was a male Scottish terrier which he said had a “very advanced chronic skin condition and the thinness would have resulted in the dog suffering unnecessarily for a considerable length of time”.
“The dog’s ears were also badly affected with crusting indicating severe damage from long standing inflammation and scratching,” he added.
A Bichon Frise female was found with “advanced cataracts” and a “right ear flap [that] appeared to be exhibiting the early signs of gangrene”.
One Bichon Frise puppy, just a few days old, had to be “immediately removed” from the premises when found as “it was so thin and cold that it could no longer suck”.
“It was so thin that the body condition score would have been close to death,” Dr O’Connor previously told the court.
Jones denied keeping the dogs to breed after his licence was not renewed at one property in 2015 and despite never having one for the other address.
But he was found guilty on all charges.
Jones, of Moelfre, Capel Y Groes, near Lampeter , was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115 and £5,500 of costs to the local authority.
