A NEATH man who threatened to kill his mother and sent dozens of abusing texts to his auntie was found with a baseball bat and a drill when he crashed his scooter, a court heard.
Jamie David Watkins also posted a written threat through the door of his grandparents house — scrawled on the back of a warning letter police had given him about his behaviour.
Swansea Crown Court heard the incidents — all of which happened in the space of a couple of days over the New Year — were sparked by the defendants's dislike of a former partner of his mum.
Helen Randall, prosecuting, said the defendant had telephoned his mother demanding to know where her ex was, and telling her he would kill her if she got in his way.
He then responded to a "happy new year" text from his auntie by sending her a stream of more than two-dozen hostile messages — she was so concerned about the messages she contacted police, who issued him with a Police Information Notice (PIN) telling him to stop.
Then on January 2 Watkins went to his grandparents house and began shouting and swearing at them — he subsequently posted a threatening message written on the back of his PIN through their door.
The court heard he was arrested later that day after his scooter collided with a car.
He was found to be in possession of a baseball bat and a drill. He told officers he had the weapons to kill his mother, kill her ex-partner and "kill anyone who got in his way".
Watkins, of Briton Ferry Road, Melyn, Neath, had previously pleased guilty to making threats to kill, harassment, and possession of an offensive weapon when he appeared for sentencing.
David Leathley, for Watkins, said his client had led a productive life as a chef until "an act of infidelity by a partner he cared for dearly" sent him into a bout of depression.
He said a combination of alcohol "and perhaps other substances" had made Watkins paranoid at the time of the incidents, and that he only wanted to protect his family from what he regarded as the threat posed by his mother's former partner.
Judge Peter Heywood said the issues the defendant may have had with his mother's ex-boyfriend were "an explanation but not an excuse" for his actions.
The judge sentenced Watkins to a total of eight months in prison.
