North Wales - Cyber sex criminals and their appalling crimes show why we all need to take internet safety seriously

To mark Safer Internet Day, the Daily Post looks at the internet sex menaces who have found themselves before the courts and in many cases jailed over the last year.

Sixties pop star Peter MacBeth, 79, was jailed for 34 months for child sex offences .
A jury convicted him of indecently assaulting a young girl on two occasions over a two-year period in the late 1990s.
MacBeth, of High Street, Bangor, was a member of The Foundations who scored a worldwide hit with the track Build Me Up Buttercup in 1968.
After he was convicted, the jury at Caernarfon Crown Court were told MacBeth had admitted downloading indecent images of children from the internet in April and May last year.
They had already been told MacBeth had been jailed for six years in 2008 after admitting indecent assault and downloading child pornography.

But unbeknown to James Calveley Evans, he was actually in contact with an undercover police officer called “Baz”.
The 33-year-old of Maes Pennant, Mostyn was jailed for 28 months at Caernarfon crown court last September
Evans, who was a PC with North Wales Police, pleaded guilty to trying to arrange a child sex offence over the internet. He also admitted three offences of distributing indecent images and three of possessing them.
Prosecutor Sion ap Mihangel said there were 737 indecent images of children and 16 videos.

John David Hulme, 56, of Glan Seiont, Caernarfon, had denied nine charges of downloading and possessing more than 15,000 indecent images of children on various items of computer equipment police seized from his home and workplace.
During a four-day trial at Caernarfon Crown Court he claimed the images had been planted on his computers.
The prison term is to be served consecutively to a six-year sentence Hulme is currently serving after being found guilty of fraud and false accounting at the Padarn Bus company

Nicholas Charles Walker admitted breaching a sexual offences prevention order and downloading indecent images of young boys and was jailed for two years.
A judge at Caernarfon Crown Court heard the 47-year-old had deleted the web browser history on his laptop – a key element of the order imposed in September 2012.
He also admitted five charges of making and possessing 205 indecent images on the computer.
Police had arrested Walker on unrelated matters at his home in Maes Llewelyn, Aberffraw. They realised adult pornography was being viewed on the laptop and it was seized and examined.
Experts found software had been installed which anonymised his internet searches and deleted the browsing history.
In 2012 Walker posed on Facebook as “Vicky from Manchester”, an attractive 19-year-old girl, and tricked a 17-year-old boy into a sexual act on a webcam.

Two brothers who were chemistry teachers at secondary schools were spared jail after admitting possessing 1,402 indecent images of children.
Dyfan Wheldon-Williams, 42, and Robyn, 39, led a “Jekyll and Hyde existence”, a judge said.
Both men, of Tywyn, Bontnewydd, near Caernarfon, told police they had indulged their addiction to online pornography for 10 years.
Judge Peter Heywood said although the offences were serious he did not believe a prison term would rectify their behaviour and handed both men a three-year community order.
Robyn Wheldon-Williams was a teacher at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen, Caernarfon. He has also been a co-presenter on S4C children’s science programme.
Dyfan Wheldon-Williams taught at Ysgol y Moelwyn, Blaenau Ffestiniog. They are no longer employed by Gwynedd Council.

A teacher who downloaded more than 1,000 indecent images of children was jailed for eight months.
Mark Haslock, 47, of Victoria Road, Llandudno, was convicted of making and possessing indecent images of children, and taking an indecent image between June 2014 and August 2015. He was cleared of a charge of voyeurism.
Haslock was arrested after police found more than 1,200 images on two computers seized at his home.

Llewelyn Buckland - ‘Stomach churning’ child porn stash

A man who had “stomach-churning” child porn on his computer was jailed for two years.
Llewelyn Buckland, 42, had been imprisoned for similar offences in 2008 and issued with a sexual offences prevention order.
A tip-off led police to visit his home in Llys Buddug, Caernarfon and a computer plus a note with email addresses and names of various websites were discovered.
Police also found more than 3,000 indecent and prohibited images.
Buckland, of Llys Buddug, Caernarfon, claimed he couldn’t help himself because of an “uncontrollable force” and that he had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A disgraced former Conservative councillor and one time Christian youth worker was jailed for 16-months after admitting child sex offences.
John George Reaney had arranged to meet a 14-year-old boy via the gay dating site Grindr.
The 51-year-old, who resigned from Colwyn Bay Town Council after he was charged, claimed he thought the boy was 16.
Judge Niclas Parry said he accepted there was no pre-planning and no grooming, and until he met the boy he believed he was meeting an adult for consensual sexual activity. But he told him: “When you saw him, you should have left.”
Reaney, then of Llanelian Heights, Old Colwyn, had no previous convictions but had “acted out of character in a moment of madness”, added the judge.

Robert Daniel James of Uwch y Maes, Dolgellau pleaded guilty to attempting to cause or incite a child of 13 to be involved in pornography after making contact on Facebook.
The 30-year-old was jailed for 18 months, must register as a sex offender for 10 years, and a sexual harm prevention order was also made for 10 years.
Judge Geraint Walters, sitting at Caernarfon Crown Court, told James: “The facts of the case make disturbing reading.”

The 52-year-old, of Pippin’s Close, Shotton, was jailed for 18 months after admitting two charges of making indecent videos between August 2005 and June 2015
He was when police acting on intelligence went to his home and seized his computer equipment.

Police acting on intelligence went to Barrows’ home and found he possessed and shared indecent images of child sex abuse.
He was jailed for four years after admitting 10 charges involving making and possessing child porn, distributing an indecent image of the most serious category, and attempting to incite a boy of 12 to engage in sexual activity.

Lester, 62, of Oak Tree Close, Shotton, was jailed after he admitted eight charges of making indecent still images and movies of children by downloading them from the internet. He also pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing indecent images of children.
He initially described the allegations as “rubbish” but during a later police interview admitted downloading the images and said he had a thrill from doing so.

A “thrill-seeking” man who tricked other men on swingers’ web sites into believing he was a woman, was locked up for 48 weeks.
It was the second time Sam James Gedd, 25, formerly of Rhyl but now of Brynford near Holywell had been before the courts for such offences.
He had convictions for setting up false profiles of three women on two sites and uploaded photographs of them without their knowledge. Men had contacted some of the victims.
He was jailed after contacting one of the women online pretending to be a friend. The victim became suspicious, realised it was Gedd and raised the alarm.

A man directed his own sex films from his home after paying children abroad to engage in sex acts.
Lee Roberts, 32, of Windsor Drive, Kinmel Bay told boys as young as 11 in the Philippines what to do in highly sexualised chats over the internet, then filmed what they were doing to each other and with older men.
Roberts was jailed for six years after admitting two charges of inciting a child to engage in sex acts.
Prosecuting barrister Sion ap Mihangel explained how through another operation it had been discovered in 2012 that young males in the Philippines were being exploited by people from the UK who paid them modest amounts of money to engage in sexual acts over the internet.

Philip Anthony Smith from Johnstown was jailed for two years for sickening images of children being raped and tortured.
The 59-year-old of Morton Avenue collected thousands of disturbing pictures and videos, including horrific child abuse and sex between people and animals.
He pleaded guilty to 13 charges of possessing indecent images and films.
The judge, Mr Recorder Timothy Petts, sitting at Mold Crown Court, said some of the images were “absolutely horrific”.

A pensioner was caught with indecent images of children after he sent 50 of them online to a photo processing firm for printing.
Staff at the Snapfish company contacted police and the home of retired postmaster Philip Nigel Hewitt, 70, was searched.
Hewitt, of Y Llythyrdy, Tanygrisiau, near Blaenau Ffestiniog, admitted seven charges which included making by downloading indecent images of children.

From 1960s pop stars to Home Office workers, ex-policemen and to teachers ... all these men found themselves convicted of sex crimes involving the internet in the last 12 months

He He received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was sent on an internet sexual offender treatment programme.
David Mainstone, prosecuting, said police went to Hewitt’s home in November 2014 after being contacted by the photography company. He told officers: “I have been expecting you. Is this about that Snapfish order?”
