YOUTHS in Neath have been left devastated after "callous" thieves stole a trailer full of bikes and equipment from a town charity.
A total of six bikes, a bike trailer, 12 spare tyres, seven cycle helmets, two steel bike stands and a selection of tools have been stolen from Neath YMCA at Pen y Dre.
The bikes were part of the YMCA's Easi Wellbeing Project, which was funded by a £243,563 grant from the Big Lottery People and Places.
Part of the project funds have gone to supporting the development and needs of young people living within Neath Port Talbot, and this element of the project is known as EASI Youth Activity Zone (EASI YAZ).
The theft is believed to have taken place sometime some time between the hours of 8pm on Saturday, May 21 and 9am on Sunday, May 22, 2016.
Chairman of the board of management YMCA Neath Kevin Lewis said: "The theft of the trailer and its contents sometime between the hours of 8pm on Saturday, 21st and 9am on Sunday 22nd May 2016 was callous and calculated.
"The thief or thieves were happy to target our charity. They had no regard for the victims. Staff were shocked when they discovered the loss; as were our young people on hearing the news.
"A key strand of the range of services and activities available to young people attending EASI YAZ is that of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
"The trailer and the bikes had been donated to YMCA Neath and were an important part of EASI YAZ plans for the summer."
Mr Lewis said he was hopeful that the culprits would be caught, and has urged anyone with any information to contact the police.
"YMCA Neath is a wholly self-funded, non-profit making organisation. The individual or individuals who acted in this unfeeling way were intent on making a quick buck. They thought nothing of the children who have lost out this summer and in the months to come," he added.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact South Wales Police on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
