A PENSIONER indecently assaulted a 21-year-old shop assistant as she was working alone.
A judge told Norman Coop, aged 70, he was old enough to be the victim’s grandfather, after being told he pulled the 21-year-old girl’s top up so see her tattoo.
He also kissed her stomach and placed her hand on his groin telling her “do you want to see what you are doing to me?”
Coop, who at the time lived in Conwy but who has since moved to Halifax, admitted a charge of sexual assault but escaped immediate custody.
Mold Crown Court heard Coop, who had never been in any trouble previously, had already served three and a half months in custody after breaching his bail conditions by failing to stay away from the shop – the equivalent to a seven month prison sentence.
He was placed on a three year community order with 60 days rehabilitation, placed on the sex offenders register for five years and made subject to a restraining order preventing him from approaching the victim for the next five years.
Prosecuting barrister Matthew Curtis said Coop, who had also been convicted of harassing a female at other business premises, had spoken to the young woman about her tattoo and asked to see more.
She lifted her top a little but refused his request to show more. He showed her his tattoos.
Coop left but returned and when they were alone in the shop grabbed her top and lifted it up saying “let me see that tattoo now” as she struggled to pull it down.
He placed his hands on the shop assistant’s bare skin and kissed her abdomen.
The “quite distraught” shopworker had told him she was only 16 hoping that would bring him to his senses.
“This is very unusual and disturbing behaviour,” the judge said.
Defending barrister Simon Rogers said that it was a sad case that Coop, who had lost his wife last year and was clearly having a difficult time, had found himself in such a position
