These are the horrific scars the frontman of Welsh band Skindred was left with after he was allegedly attacked while walking home.
Benji Webbe, from Newport , had been at a private birthday party at The Lounge in the city and was making his way home when he claims he was attacked by a woman in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He said: “I went outside with my girlfriend, Julie, and I saw about three or four girls arguing.
“As we went past them I tried to calm them down and said ‘calm down will you’ jokingly.
“One of the women turned to me and came within four inches of my face, screaming and shouting.”
He said the woman had fallen over and her glass had smashed and added: “She got up and all hell broke loose.
“I thought she had slapped me in the face.”
'It was about two inches from my jugular vein'
But Benji said as he turned to another man, who was trying to ease the situation, to give him a bandana to press on an open cut which was bleeding, the man told Benji he was bleeding from the face and throat.
Benji went to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital where he was given stiches.
“Every time I talked the gash would open further,” Benji said. “The nurse said it was definitely glass.
“It was about two inches from my jugular vein. At first I didn’t realise the seriousness of the damage. I could have not been here today.
“One girl grabbed Julie as well and they were spitting on her.”
Following the incident Benji says he thinks all clubs should have plastic bottles and glasses.
“They make nice looking plastic ones now and it would be a great idea,” he added.
'I have forgiven the person who did this to me'
“This has left me feeling that life is short and you never know what’s coming.
“I have forgiven the person who did this to me and have no hatred towards them.
“I had a wonderful night at Iffy’s (The Lounge director) birthday and I have had calls and messages from all over the world wishing me well.
“It’s a nice feeling to know that people care about you.
“This will not stop me from going out in Newport because it’s a great community. People need to think about their actions when they’ve been drinking.”
Police appeal
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: “Officers in Newport are appealing for information following an assault that took place outside the Crosskeys Public House in Newport City Centre, sometime between midnight and 1.30am on Saturday morning.
“During the assault, a 48 year old man from Newport sustained injuries to the face and neck that required stiches.
“If anyone has any information, please call 101 quoting log number 378 31/01/16.”
