STOP and search is being brought in at a town centre fast food restaurant in a bid to clamp down on disorder.
North Wales Police are working with McDonald’s on Regent Street in Wrexham, to rid the food outlet of persistent trouble caused by youths.
Restaurant staff are having to deal with nuisance behaviour on a regular basis, which includes themselves and customers suffering verbal abuse.
From today to March 7, Operation Burns will be in place, led by PCSO Kerry Vaughan.
Troublemakers could find themselves banned not only from the restaurant, but even from the local area for 48 hours if they persist in causing nuisance.
Town centre sergeant Steve Owens says the operation will see a more visible police presence in and around McDonald’s, particularly from 4pm onwards after the school day has ended.
He said: “The operation will run for two weeks initially.
“McDonald’s are fully on board with this and have asked for our help. We have been getting calls from them about regular youth anti-social behaviour such as spitting, swearing, staff and customers being abused.
“It’s causing a mess and affecting business as people will start to avoid the area.”
He added: “Most of the people causing trouble have been banned by McDonald’s but it’s being ignored, so we are becoming involved.
“The aim of this operation is to address the behaviour and re-assure staff and customers.
“We will be stopping and searching people on the premises, and making sure there is a high visibility presence.
“Dispersal orders will be instigated for the period of the operation.
“Authorised by an inspector, this means any uniformed officer can ban someone from the restaurant and surrounding area for 48 hours.
“If they return within that time they will be arrested.”
Sgt Owens said the restaurant will also be taking measures to deter potential troublemakers.
He added: “One of the attractions is the free wi-fi, so that will be turned off for periods during the day and early evening during the operation.”
