Tyroan Gordon was just a teenager when he armed himself with a bottle and launched the terrifying attack

A teenager used a broken bottle to attack his boyfriend in bed after threatening to kill him as he slept.
Cardiff Crown Court heard insurance worker Tyroan Gordon, who was 19 at the time and who had been in an “on-off” relationship with victim Grantley Moorman, believes a “spiked” drink may have made him behave as he did.
He was jailed for four years after pleading guilty to a charge of wounding with intent and admitting smashing the windscreen of his victim’s car.
The attacks came after the two had been out to bars in Cardiff city centre in June last year but had become separated during the evening, said prosecutor Andrew Jones.
Mr Moorman returned alone to the home he shared with his mother in Poppyfield Close, St Mellons , but before he went to bed there was a “conversation” between the two men on Facebook .
Mr Jones told the court: “In it the defendant said things like ‘F*** off Grant’, ‘Get out of my life’, ‘I’ll f****** kill you’ and and ‘I’ll kill you in your sleep’.
“At 4am Mr Moorman’s mother Pauline Coles was woken by the dog barking and heard the defendant, who was staying with them at the time, shouting to be let in.
“He was clearly upset and when he asked for a cigarette she went to find him one then heard a commotion and the sound of glass smashing.”
Her scream was said to have woken up her son.

'Deep' lacerations

Mr Moorman told police later that as he was roused and went to leave the bedroom he “immediately felt pain” to his head.
Mr Jones said: “At some stage the defendant had armed himself with a vodka bottle and pictures taken at the scene show it shattered over the bedroom.
“There were punches and Mr Moorman was not only struck with the bottle but was bitten to his hand and his chest as well as suffering an injury to his shin.”
Mrs Coles rang the police and Gordon was still there when they arrived having made “no attempt to flee”.
At the University Hospital of Wales , Heath , doctors found “deep” lacerations to Mr Moorman’s head and to his shin – where one cut had gone through to the bone.
“There were also human bite marks,” said Mr Jones.
“He was taken to the hospital covered in blood.”

'Unprovoked and vicious'

When he was arrested Gordon, of Moorhouse Close, Telford, said he had little recollection of what happened.
He remembered being “lost” in the city centre and then making his way to Mrs Coles’ house.
“The next thing he recalls is blood but said he didn’t know how the injuries were caused. He thinks his drink may have been spiked,” Mr Jones said.
The smashed windscreen was discovered when the victim went to his car the next day.
In a victim impact statement he said he had needed surgery to his left hand following the attack and had been left with scars to his body.
“Even six months later I am not 100% and the emotional impact has been even worse than the physical effect,” he wrote.
“He attacked me when I was asleep and such an unprovoked and vicious assault by someone I trusted makes it difficult for me to now trust others.
“I have not spoken to him since so I still don’t know why he did it.”
Defence barrister Matthew Roberts said Gordon, who recently turned 20 and has no previous convictions, “fully appreciated” what he had done and felt “terribly sorry”.
“It was an immature reaction to a perceived wrongdoing during the evening,” he told Recorder of Cardiff Judge Eleri Rees.
“It is a sad case – Tyroan Gordon’s life will be put on hold for a few years but that is his own fault.
“It was a one-off and he will not be before a court again.”
Jailing him, Judge Rees said: “I accept your remorse is genuine and take into account your age.
“You entered that house and attacked him viciously. The injuries included the emotional shock – he thought he was safe in his own bed.”
