A man is facing a life sentence after pleading guilty to murdering a young father.
Appearing at Cardiff Crown Court shortly before lunchtime on Monday, Rhys Barnes, 28, of Clarence Place, Newport , admitted killing father of two Rhys Jones on November 24 .
Prosecuting counsel Michael Jones said the plea had been entered on the “full facts of the case”.
No details of the killing were given during the short hearing.
But the facts will be outlined by Mr Jones when Barnes returns to the court to be sentenced on March 24.
Defence barrister Jonathan Rees said there would be no request for pre-sentence reports.
'A lovely man'
Mr Jones, 36 and formerly of Pontllanfraith was pronounced dead at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, following an incident in Clarence Place.
At the time of his death, he was described by his family as “a lovely man” and someone with “lots of friends” who “lived life to the full”.
He is understood to have moved to Clarence Place about six weeks before he died.
Barnes, who was remanded in custody by Recorder of Cardiff Judge Eleri Rees, was given a “thumbs up” sign by some of the five people gathered in the court’s public gallery.
Mr Jones’ family is expected to attend next month’s sentencing hearing.
