Judge said Tony Sturrs had an 'atrocious' criminal record before sentencing him to 16 months

A prolific shoplifter has chalked up his 100th and 101st convictions for theft.
Tony Sturrs, of Trem y Garnedd, Bangor, stole two sets of bedding from TK Maxx and then later the same day pinched a candle from Tesco.
At Caernarfon Crown Court today Judge Niclas Parry sentenced Sturrs to 16 months behind bars.
Judge Parry said the 29-year-old had an “atrocious” record of offending and re-offending and had been given numerous second chances by the justice system.
Just four days earlier he appeared in Caernarfon on another theft charge and was spared jail when another judge suspended a prison sentence of 10 months.
'The public and small business owners need to be protected from you'
Paulinus Barnes, prosecuting, told the court Sturrs had an “extensive” conviction record which had led him to be banned from almost every shop in the Bangor high street area.
Sturrs walked into Tesco on February 3 and was observed by store security, who recognised him due to his previous thefts, the court was told.
He wrapped his jumper around two sets of bedding and was able to escape on foot.
Later the same day he went into TK Maxx and stole a scented candle. The stolen items were worth £52.
Sturrs was found by officers in the Union pub, Bangor and the candle was recovered. The bedding was never recovered.
“This is a man who has 99 convictions for theft. This makes 100 and 101,” Mr Barnes said.
Matthew Curtis, defending, said: “He knows he will receive a custodial sentence today.
“He did not trust himself to go through with the community order and now he faces jail.”
Judge Niclas Parry said: “100 offences of theft aged only 29. Despite having been spared custody for what I am sure was a very proper reason, four days later you committed these thefts.
“The time has come for the public and for small business owners in the area to be protected from you.”
Judge Parry activated the 10 month sentence and also gave Sturrs six months for the additional thefts, to a total of 16 months.
After passing sentence he reminded Sturrs: “When you come out of custody the court orders (banning him from several shops) continue to be in effect.”
