Former soldier with post traumatic stress disorder
A FORMER soldier suffering from post traumatic stress disorder slashed a stranger across the face in an unprovoked attack, a court has heard.
Alan Michael Stout attacked the man on a Llanelli street — but can remember nothing about the incident.
Swansea Crown Court heard that the 29-year-old was seen by witnesses getting out of a car and approaching his victim, first grabbing him by the throat and then lashing out at the man.

I had to declare my love on one particular day! Turns out I do and I want this year to be special.

Dyfed Thomas, for the prosecution, said witnesses described seeing "something like a screwdriver" and "something sharp and pointy" in his hand, but the exact type of weapon used was unknown.
The victim suffered severe swelling to the face and a cut on his cheek.
The barrister said that when Stout was arrested later that day it was clear to the officers he was under the influence of drink or drugs, and when approached shouted at them "I am a sniper — are you seeing this Sarge?"
The court was told Stout had drunk a large quantity of Jack Daniel's whiskey and smoked cannabis on the day in question, and remembered nothing between getting into his friend's car and then waking up in the police cells.
After he sobered up he told police: "If I am responsible for this incident, I am full of remorse".
Stout — of Parc Morlais, Llangennech — had previously pleaded guilty to wounding when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.
The court heard Stout's brother had also been a soldier but had been killed on duty in 2008 — the defendant was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder in 2010 and discharged from the Army.
In the years after leaving the Army Stout committed a catalogue of offences, including multiple assaults, battery, shoplifting, racially aggravated public order, criminal damage, and assaulting an off-duty police constable who was trying to arrest him after she had smashed bottles of wine in a Morrison's supermarket. In 2013 he was involved in a four hour siege with armed police at a house in Aldershot when he threatened a man with a knife and told him he had a gun, then locked himself in a room.
Catherine Richards, for Stout, said her client "could not understand" why he had become involved in the Llanelli incident.
Stout was sentenced to 21 months in prison.
