VANDALS have been condemned for damaging a town centre park.
Visitors to Acton Park early on Friday morning found grass had been damaged by tyre marks after someone had driven through the park overnight.
The damage was discovered by Friends of Acton Park member Steve Pritchard as he walked through the park.
Chris Cribbin, chairman of the Friends of Acton Park committee, said: “There has been quite a bit of that sort of vandalism in the area and at first people thought it might have been council vehicles causing it because they tend to be quite heavy and the ground is very soft.
“There is a degree of that but this has been done by mindless idiots. We have got such a small group of volunteers working really hard to improve the park and add
to it. It is a lovely place and the majority of people who go there appreciate the beauty of the park but you get these idiots from time to time. This is the sort of thing that happens during half term.
“It is a real shame. The problem we have got is we are not in the park all the time and this kind of thing usually happens at night under the cover of darkness.
“We are lucky in that there is not a great deal of damage and hopefully this will be the end of it.
“The only way we could stop it permanently would be to have someone policing the park 24/7 but that is absolutely impossible.”
The Friends of Acton Park is a non-profit making community group set up by Wrexham Council and residents in 2008 with the aim to promote, protect, maintain and improve the park so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.
The 55-acre site now features a bowling green, tennis courts, play areas for children, a lake, the Gorsedd Stones from the 1977 National Eisteddfod and a Japanese garden.
