Two men who threw wheelie bins at a house window on Christmas Day before attacking the occupant inside with a piece of wood have been jailed.
Jason Aplin, 25, and Lewis Holloway, 24, were jailed at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary.
The defendants assaulted Richard McDonald at his home in King Street, Ebbw Vale, on Christmas Day last year after getting drunk at a nearby pub.
The court heard that Aplin and Holloway went to Mr McDonald’s home after a female mutual friend had fallen out with him.
Along with three others they hurled abuse and shouted outside Mr McDonald’s house, waking up neighbours who heard someone shout: ‘F****** get out here, I am going to kill you’.

'Come on'
Prosecutor Ian Kolvin told the court Mr McDonald was watching television in the house when the assault happened.
He said: “He heard a bang on his window and heard male voices shouting ‘Come on’.
“He was scared they wanted to beat him up so he phoned the police.
“Whilst on the phone his front window was smashed and a male, who we now know was Jason Aplin, came in through the window followed by Lewis Holloway who was holding a piece of wood.
“Recycling bins were thrown through his window – a green recycling bin and a big black bin.
“Mr McDonald put out his arms to protect himself and Aplin punched him.
“Holloway hit him using the piece of wood two or three times. He tried to push them away while being punched and they kept attacking him for two to three minutes.
“Holloway then turned to the television and used the piece of wood to hit it, causing it damage. The two men then climbed out of the window and ran off.”
Mr McDonald sustained injuries including a graze, swelling to the right elbow, a red mark to his back, and scratches to his cheek and face.
Alcohol issues
Holloway was arrested the same day as the attack while Aplin was arrested on January 19 after blood found at Mr McDonald’s matched his DNA profile.
A statement read out on behalf of Mr McDonald to the court said he was suffering from anxiety as a result of the attack and was thinking about leaving his home.
The court heard that both Aplin and Holloway had issues with alcohol, as well as drugs in Holloway’s case, which had caused them to behave in this way.
Sentencing, Judge Rhys Rowlands said: “As you appreciate in the cold light of day, when you are now sober and in custody, this was a serious offence indeed and a terrifying offence as far as Mr McDonald is concerned.
“You'd both been drinking and had far too much to drink. That clouded your judgement and you went round to Mr McDonald’s home in the early hours.
“Drunken threats were issued and you went in the house and broke the window by throwing bins through it.
“Once inside the ordeal continued. You punched him repeatedly and you Lewis Holloway struck him with a piece of wood.
“This was a sustained attack but did not result in serious physical injuries.”
Holloway, of Marine Street, Ebbw Vale, was sentenced to six years and eight months imprisonment while Aplin, also of Marine Street, Ebbw Vale, was sentenced to six years imprisonment.
