Caernarfon.North Wales - Thieves target train track at Gwynedd tourist attraction

Yobs are said to have stolen hundreds of feet of track from the miniature railway at Gypsy Wood Park in Bontnewydd

Callous thieves ripped up hundreds of feet of a children’s train track at a Gwynedd tourist attraction.
The yobs stole a “good proportion” of the outdoor brass miniature railway track used by youngsters at Gypsy Wood Park in Bontnewydd near Caernarfon.
The theft happened sometime between Friday, February 19 and Wednesday, February 24.
A member of staff at the park made the shocking discovery on Wednesday afternoon, after the offenders left only the plastic sleepers behind.
The theft came just weeks before the park opens again to visitors and has hampered ongoing work on the track, which houses a variety of model trains.
John Evans, who owns the park, said: “A worker made the discovery on Wednesday afternoon and the theft was reported to the police.
“The theft has happened sometime during the last week.
“The offenders have ripped up the brass from the tracks and just left the plastic sleepers behind.
“The track is over half a kilometre long and they’ve taken a good proportion of it - at least a few hundred feet.”

John says staff have been working on expanding the railway track over the last 10 years and that lots of hard work has now been undone.
He added: “The track is used by children and schools regularly visit the park.
“Lots of hard work has gone into developing the track over the 10 years and over this winter, ready for the Easter opening.
“It really is terrible as all our hard work has been undone.
“It’s also thoughtless and very disappointing for the children.
“We’ve spent £20,000 on the track and will have to pay over £1,000 in damage because of this theft.
“We’re hoping we can still repair the track in time for when we open the park in March.”
Police are now investigating and appealing for witnesses to the incident.
A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “We had a call just after 2.30pm on Wednesday, February 24, reporting some brass railway track had been stolen from Gypsy Wood Park in Bontnewydd.
“The incident is being investigated by police.
“Anybody with any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference U027055.”
