A DRUNK who abused and threatened hospital staff who were trying to help him has been jailed.
District Judge Gwyn Jones, sitting at Prestatyn magistrates’ court, told 26-year-old Peter John McGuiness that only a custodial sentence was justified for such behaviour.
“Members of staff and other patients have to be protected,” he said.
McGuiness, who lives in a flat at the Trefnant Hotel, Trefnant, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour in the A & E department at Glan Clwyd Hospital on January 7, stealing a medical hammer and damaging a door .
He received a prison sentence of 120 days for the offences, with an extra seven days for failing to attend court.
Prosecutor Tracey Willingham said that police were called to the Trefnant Hotel where McGuiness had been involved in an argument with his father.
Damage had been caused to the flat and McGuiness had suffered a gash to his leg which needed to be stitched.
On arriving in hospital at 3am, however, he became aggressive towards Dr Eve Blakemore, shouting: “You’re all ------- paedophiles.”
He also threatened nurse Jane Parkinson and held a phone above his head, asking “What are you going to do about it?”
To calm the situation the staff left the room but McGuiness stormed out, slamming the door and damaging its hinges. The police were called and after his wound was stitched he was arrested.
“Dr Blakemore felt very threatened and intimidated,” said Miss Willingham.
When interviewed, McGuiness said he could re member little about the incident because he had been drinking, but accepted that he had behaved as described.
Dafydd Roberts, defending, said the defendant had had a troubled upbringing and suffered from depression and panic attacks. He also acknowledged that he had a drink problem for which he would like some help.
“He knows that his behaviour was totally unacceptable and that he was out of order, especially as they were trying to help him,” he said.
Jailing him, the District Judge said: “The A & E department at the best of times is a very sensitive place and the job of the professionals was made much more difficult when they were trying to treat you in accordance with their profession.
“You threatened the doctor who feared for her personal safety.”
He said that McGuiness’s behaviour had impacted not only on the staff but also on other patients.
