A MAN from Wrexham has been found guilty of raping a woman in the town last October.
Shortly before the rape Simon Patrick Nash, 43, had earlier changed his plea to guilty to assault causing the woman actual bodily harm.
Appearing at Mold Crown Court, sitting at Chester, he had a day earlier been found not guilty of raping the same woman last September.
Nash will also face a retrial on an allegation of raping another  woman he met outside a Wrexham pub.
The jury of seven women and five men failed to reach a majority verdict and Judge David Hale dismissed them. A retrial expected to last two days will start at Mold Crown Court, sitting in Chester, on February 22.
Nash, 43, denies raping the woman at his bedsit on Darby Road, Brynteg, last August after meeting her outside the Wetherspoon’s pub that day.
He has told the court the sex with the woman, a voluntary patient at the Heddfan mental health unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, was consensual.
During the trial the woman told the jury that after having a drink at another pub in Wrexham she agreed to go Nash’s house as he had to pick up some money before going back into town.
Nash told the court he had told the woman while they talked outside the pub that he used to be a carer .
He told her he was getting a taxi back to pick up money from his house before returning to town to watch a televised football match.
He said as they passed the hospital he offered to drop her off, but she said she would go to his house.
But the woman told the court she would not have gone to Nash’s house had she known they were passing the Maelor hospital en route.
The woman said Nash told her go to his room as his landlady was downstairs.  They chatted and she had a sip of vodka and Coke.
Nash said he went to the toilet and when he came back, the woman was half naked. They then had consensual sex, he said.
The woman said she “must have dozed off” and awoke to find the lower half of her clothing had been removed with Nash on top of her.
She told Nash she did not want sex but he told her to “shush” and not to worry before he raped.
