A FORMER champion boxer who turned to drug dealing in order to save money to buy a house was arrested after being spotted trying out a 'tazer' in the street.
Police were called to the incident in Morriston's Chemical Road last August, and spoke to Liam Williams, who they noticed had bleeding knuckles. The 25-year-old went into a property in neighbouring Heol Gwernen, where he threw hundreds of pounds of cash on top of a cooker. Williams also disposed of his wallet upstairs in the property, and officers later recovered a total of £1,051 from the address, plus a further £1,170 when they subsequently searched his home address in Brayley Road.
A search of his car revealed 30 plastic sealed bags containing 20 grams of cocaine, which was 'very low purity' of 12 per cent, as well as a stun gun, sometimes referred to as a tazer in court, which was disguised as a torch.
Prosecuting, Brian Simpson told Swansea Crown Court that an examination of his mobile phone revealed text messages to suggest he had been dealing, largely in gram deals but also by the ounce. He said: "When arrested he said 'I am an ********. I have been doing it to save money for a house".
Mitigating, Huw Davies said Williams had bought the stun gun in Turkey, and had been demonstrating it with two acquaintances, which had prompted a member of the public to call police. He said the plumber, who had played rugby at district level and won a Welsh boxing title, represented his country, and coached at Morristion Amateur Boxing Club, had hitherto clean character.
Williams pleaded guilty to supplying cocaine, possession with intent to supply, and possession of a disguised fire arm.
Sentencing Williams to a total of five years imprisonment, Judge Huw Davies said: "Before you committed these offences, you had committed nothing.
"On the contrary, you had been a well brought up young man, and established your own small business.
"You wanted a house and took it into your head to make money quickly and the means was by buying and dealing in drugs.
"You made a wildly foolish decision to accumulate money first by dealing in Class A drugs.
He added, the pre sentence report concluded "you are a likeable young man making himself useful and supporting his family in any way he could, and I accept that".
