A killer has been warned he may never leave prison after being caught with a mobile phone in his cell at Cardiff Prison.
Stephen Richardson, aged 43, was jailed for a minimum of 14 years after helping a close friend batter a love rival to death.
But he was taken to court again after smuggling a miniature mobile phone into his cell, and was warned he had "brought his chances of parole into jeopardy".
Recorder Eleri Rees QC said: "He must understand if he repeats such a serious breach of the prison regime he will bring his chances of parole into jeopardy."
Cardiff Crown Court was told that Richardson, of no fixed abode, was caught with a CZ miniature mobile phone in his cell in HMP Cardiff.
Prosecutor Michael Jones said: "During a search of the cell officers found a TV remote control.
"They examined it and saw the control had been tampered with - and saw that a black mobile had been hidden inside the remote.
"He denied the remote control was his and said he had no knowledge of the mobile phone or how it got there."
The criminal - who has 56 convictions - was described as an "enthusiastic participant" in the brutal beating.
A murder trial jury found Richardson guilty of the manslaughter of Darren Almond, aged 42, in an attack at the Morning Star pub in Pontypridd.
Defence barrister Andrew Taylor told Cardiff Crown Court: "It is a mark on the record which may influence the parole board when he is considered for released."
Richardson, formerly of Pontypridd, pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited item in prison and was handed a six-month concurrent jail term.
