Holywell,North Wales - Heroin addict nearly crushed policeman with stolen three-wheeler

Dean Banon Roberts was jailed for driving a stolen car while on heroin in Dyserth
A heroin addict nearly crushed a policeman in a stolen car with only three tyres on it.

Dean Banon Roberts, was spotted crawling along with smoke bellowing out of the vehicle before nearly squashing an officer between it a squad car

Dean Banon Roberts, 32, was driving the Hyundai he had taken from Holywell when he was spotted by police in Dyserth.
The vehicle had smoke belching from the back of it and was driving at a snail’s pace.
PC David Plant got out of his patrol car and ran between the two cars planning to arrest the driver.
But Roberts, 32, who was high on heroin at the time, let the car roll back, nearly crushing PC Plant between it and the squad car.
PC Plant was able to avoid injury by putting a hand on either vehicle and lifting himself up so he didn’t get squashed by the two bumpers.
Roberts, of Strand Close in Holywell, had taken the car from outside a newsagents after its owner left it outside for less than two minutes.
Owner said his car was immaculate normally, but that when he got it back from the police compound a couple of days after the May 24 theft, it was missing a tyre and alloy wheel trim.
PC Plant, along with colleague PC Peter Ashton, put their blue flashing lights on after receiving a report of a stolen car in Rhyl, intending to track it down and stop it on the A55.
But they realised that one of the vehicles getting out of their way as they sped through Dyserth was in fact the stolen Hyundai.
They parked the police car across the road as the vehicle approached, fearing it was going to be used to ram them.
But it managed to squeeze between the car and a wall and carry on.
It drove at around 30mph up a hill in the Newmarket area with only three tyres on, but then slowed to a crawl.
After jumping out of the way of the car as it rolled back, PC Ashton managed to arrest Roberts, who didn’t seem to know what was going on and whose first reaction when approached by the policeman was to ask “What’s up mate?”
A blood test showed that Roberts had 189 milligrammes of methadone in his blood which the court heard would impair his driving ability.
Interviewed, Roberts could not recall where he had been but said that the car rolled back slightly because it was an automatic.
He denied using illegal drugs that day and in his interview said he did not recall telling officers at the scene that he had taken heroin.
His defence solicitor, Gary Harvey, said Roberts had mental health problems and was now being cared for by his family.
Roberts was sentenced to 30 weeks in custody - 26 for the driving offences and another four for earlier theft and drugs offences - and was banned from driving for two years by Flintshiremagistrates.
Charges of assaulting and resisting police when he was arrested on a warrant were adjourned until February 3.
Sergeant Wesley Williams said: "Dean Bannon Roberts is a prolific offender and his sentence will I’m sure bring a degree of relief to many in the local community.
"I welcome the sentence and hope it will provide the public with some reassurance and make our communities safer. North Wales Police will relentlessly pursue those individuals who cause most harm and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated."
