QUAD bike owners across the Gower area are being urged to take extra steps to protect their property after a spate of thefts.
Nine machines have been taken in recent months, with the most recent incident happening in the early hours of today when a red Honda quad was stolen from Scurlage.
Usually the thieves are targeting barns, isolated outbuildings and garages, taking not just bikes but small items of machinery and power tools as well.
Police say similar thefts have taken place in other rural areas across the South Wales Police force area, while forces around the UK are reporting the same problem.

Gower PCSO Andrew Brown said: "The Gower neighbourhood policing team are calling on Gowerfarmers to ensure that they do everything possible to make life hard for rural criminals.
"Gower is a very safe place to live, but unfortunately quad bikes, plant and other farm machinery are attractive targets for travelling criminals.
"While we don't want rural residents to be unnecessarily concerned, we do want them to take basic crime prevention measures to keep their valuable property safe.
"If you have any information in relation to quad bike thefts in Gower which you believe may assist the police with their enquiries then please get in touch."
Officers from the Gower policing team are currently visiting farms and other isolated properties on their patch to try to drive home the security message.
Police are urging farmers, householders and business-owners to take steps to make their property secure including keeping outbuildings locked and secure at all times, maintaining fences and gates, and installing outdoor lighting in yards and around isolated buildings.
They are also urging people to property-mark vehicles and power tools, and to consider fitting tracker-devises to tractors and expensive quads.
Recent months have also seen quad bikes stolen from properties in Birchgrove, Trebanos, Rhydyfro and Cwmllynfell.
