Three bungling youths broke into a ticket machine at a Connah’s Quay car park – only to find it empty because controversial charges had not yet been launched.
The machine at the Maude Street car park was damaged at around 2am yesterday (November 30) – six hours before pay and display was introduced.
It was initially taped up but has now been coned off awaiting repair by Flintshire Councilworkers.
A North Wales Police spokesman said: “Three youths were seen trying to break open the ticket machine. It was damaged but no money was stolen as it was empty.
“One youth was wearing a grey tracksuit, another was wearing dark jeans and a long coat, and a third was wearing a grey hoodie and dark coloured jeans.
“They made off down High Street. Anyone with information about this crime should call police on 101, quoting reference S182885.”
Earlier this year, cash-strapped Flintshire Council voted in favour of introducing charges at 38 of its free car parks across nine towns, including at County Hall in Mold.
Charges were launched in Connah’s Quay at its Maude Street and High Street car parks from 8am yesterday.
They apply until 5pm, Monday to Saturday but excluding Bank Holidays.
Motorists are charged 20p for up to two hours, 50p for up to four hours, and £1 for all day.
