A NEATH man who "lured" an ex-partner to his house then attacked her on a tarpaulin sheet in a bedroom and told her he had arranged for somebody to come and collect her body.
Rhodri Jones asked the woman to go to his house to give a family member a lift, but it was a trap — he was the only person in the property when she arrived.
Swansea Crown Court heard that when the victim realised what was going on she tried to lock herself in the bathroom of Jones's house but he dragged her into a bedroom.
Brian Simpson, prosecuting, said Jones had put a blue tarpaulin on the bed in the room, and threw the woman onto it, sitting astride her and punching her in the face — he held her by her hair with one hand, and repeatedly hit her with the other.
The court heard Jones also grabbed his victim by the throat and accused her of cheating on him, and told her he had "somebody on standby" to collect her body.
However he then began crying, told her to call the police, and left the house.
The victim fled the property, locked herself in her car, and called 999.
The court heard the woman suffered a black eye, a cut lip, and swelling and bruising to her face in the attack.
Jones, of Glyn Garfield Close, Penrhiwtyn, Neath, had previously pleaded guilty to making threats to kill and to assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.
John Hipkin, for Jones, said his client's life had "spiralled downwards into drink and cocaine", and that the drug made him paranoid.
He added that Jones was remorseful for what he had done.
Judge Geraint Walters told the defendant he had subjected the woman to a planned and "terrifying" ordeal.
He said: "In drink and in jealousy you purposefully lured her to your house. You subjected her to a relentless assault that left her gasping for air. You told her you were going to kill her.
"Mercifully, during this ordeal you came to your senses, you calmed down and became emotional."
He added that Jones had some "very serious issues" that had led him to use violence and that needed to be tackled.
The judge sentenced Jones to 16 months in prison, and made him the subject of a 10-year restraining order banning him from contacting his victim.
