Police efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour blighting a village football ground have been welcomed.
Officers have been dealing with groups of youths gathering at the stand near Ponciau Banks football pitch, home to Rhos Aelwyd FC, for several months.
In March, the Leader reported Cllr Paul Pemberton said footballers had been forced to clear broken glass from the pitch before being able to play, with bottles being snapped at the neck and forced into the ground with the jagged edge facing up.
There were also reports of youngsters drinking and playing music until the early hours of the morning, causing consternation for residents living nearby.
But after a concerted effort by officers in the area over the last month, Cllr Pemberton said the issues had largely abated.
He said: “I’d like to thank the police because, after last month’s meeting, they have gone down there and found youths drinking but really had an effect.
“They got in touch with the parents of the kids and told them what they have been up to. After that, it has got considerably better.”
PCSO Andy Harris said: “We are still getting issues with anti-social behaviour on the football stands and we are going down there and dealing with them when we can.
“If we go down there and find people drinking and smoking, we are able to move them on. It is getting better but obviously there is still work going on with it.
“It’s not just kids from Rhos, there are people from different areas as well. Last time there were some from Ruabon.
“What we really need is, if there are any problems, for people to ring it in so we can deal with it while it is happening.”
