Ysgol Brynhyfryd chemistry teacher Mathew Jones is accused of unacceptable professional conduct at a fitness to practice hearing
A schoolboy described how he saw a teacher apparently receiving oral sex from a schoolgirl in a storeroom.
The teenager, who cannot be named, told a hearing of the Education Workforce Council’s fitness to practise committee how he was shocked by what he saw during a game of hide-and-seek around Ysgol Brynhyfryd, Ruthin, on a summer’s evening in 2014.
The boy, identified only as Pupil X, said he saw chemistry teacher Mathew Jones leaning against a table in the room where sports equipment was stored and the girl, a pupil at a different school, had her face near his groin.
Asked by chairman Steve Powell how clear a view he had, he said he could not see Jones’s private parts, but added: “I didn’t think she was doing up his shoelaces.”
The teenager, who told friends what he had seen, said that in his mind the incident had “reinforced Mr Jones’s nickname – Paedo Jones”.
Jones, who was not present at the hearing today (Tuesday) and was not represented, said in a statement that he could not deny being in the storeroom but claimed that he was being helped to clear up after a game.
The committee was told that Jones, who began work at Brynhyfryd in 2010, ran a sports team but colleagues had concerns about his relationship with some of the team members.
Eleri Jones, who was head teacher at the time, said she advised him to be careful and not to place himself in a vulnerable position. That followed reports that he was giving lifts home to girls and also giving some private lessons at his home.
“But he came across as arrogant and seemed to think he was untouchable,” she said.
PE teacher Elin Morris told the hearing that in February 2012, during a games night for teaching colleagues at the Griffin Hotel, Llanbedr, Jones became very drunk and was chatting up a colleague, who rejected his advances.
Shortly afterwards he told another person present: “She wouldn’t have rejected me if she had seen the size of my penis.”
“We were a bit shocked that somebody would say something like that,” said Mrs Morris.
Jones, who left Brynhyfryd in January this year, is accused of unacceptable professional conduct involving seven specific incidents.
He is alleged to have made an inappropriate remark concerning the colleague at the Griffin; being alone with the girl in the storeroom when it was inappropriate to do so and taking two girls in his car, when one took pictures on his mobile phone and sent them to another teacher.
He is also said to have delivered a sex education lesson knowing that it had already been given by a colleague, failing to follow the sequence of lessons in the module “Sex and Science”, and teaching Year 7 the Sex and Science module when it had been allocated to another teacher.
Mrs Eleri Jones said that after she had spoken to Jones about giving lifts to girl pupils the mother of one of them explained that she had given permission for him to do so and she was upset that Mr Jones could face disciplinary action.
The hearing continues.
