Wrexham,North Wales - Man arrested by anti-terror police is Wrexham council worker

A man arrested by anti-terror police was today revealed to be a Wrexham council worker.

Neighbours say Aabid Ali, 48, who remains in custody after raid at Yale Park home is 'recent convert to Islam'

Aabid Ali, 48, was arrested at his home in the town’s Yale Park on Thursday on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.
He remained in custody in the West Midlands last night after counter terrorism officers were granted extra time to quiz him at the weekend.
Neighbours spoke of their shock when armed counter-terrorism officers cordoned off the road as they began a sweep of Ali’s house and gardens which he is believed to have shared with his partner and young daughter.

Bearded Ali is thought to be a recent convert to Islam, having taken up the faith within the last two years, according to a neighbour. Others living nearby described a quiet family who “kept themselves to themselves”.
It is also understood friends, neighbours and co-workers of Ali have been interviewed by anti-terror cops since his arrest.
Ali, who was wearing bright orange work clothes during his arrest, is understood to work for Wrexham County Borough Council’s refuse collection and waste management service.
A council spokeswoman said: “We have nothing to add and we have been told to direct you to counter-terrorism communications.”
Trustees of the Wrexham Islamic Cultural Centre on Grosvenor Road, where Ali was an “infrequent visitor”, also declined to comment.
However a source close to the mosque said he visited “from time to time”.
Ali was arrested as part of joint operation by Wales Extremism Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU), North Wales Police and West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit (WMCTU).

A police spokeswoman said today: “I can confirm that a 48-year-old man remains in custody after a warrant of further detention was granted, but no further information is available at this time.”
Detectives can keep Ali in custody until Thursday, at which time they will either charge, release or apply for another warrant of further detention.
