Caerphilly,South Wales - Knifeman stabbed victim five times in unprovoked attack on busy high street

A man has been sentenced to life in prison after a man was stabbed and seriously injured in Caerphilly town centre.
Evan Smith, 43, from Caerphilly, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon at Swansea Crown Court.
His 61-year-old victim is still in hospital after being stabbed five times on Cardiff Road in the town on Thursday, September 15.
Police described it as an "unprovoked and violent" attack on a busy high street in broad daylight.
Members of the public were also thanked for coming to the assistance of the victim.
Smith, whose address was given as no fixed abode, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a one year sentence (to run concurrently) for possession of an offensive weapon.
He must serve a minimum of seven years and 60 days.
Officer in the Case, Detective Constable Matt Clarke said: "This was a frightening, unprovoked, violent attack carried out on a busy high street in broad daylight.
"I would like to praise the actions of the members of the public who were in Caerphilly at the time of the incident, and thank them for coming to the assistance of the victim.
"The victim sustained serious injuries as a result of five stab wounds which will have a lasting effect on his quality of life. He currently remains in hospital for rehabilitation.
"We welcome the Court result."
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Amanda Thomas added: “I would like to echo the comments and sentiments of DC Clarke in relation to the actions taken by members of the public that day.
"Their actions, together with medical personnel and police officers at the scene, helped to save the life of the victim and to quickly apprehend the offender. This type of crime is rare and I would like to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident.
"This incident has clearly affected the community and in particular those members of the public who witnessed the attack. We have ensured that appropriate support has been offered to those who have been affected.
"My gratitude goes out to all the police officers, police staff and members of the public who have collectively assisted with this investigation. This type of enquiry is resource intensive and has involved staff and officers from all different work streams within Gwent Police.
"The continued hard work and support has ensured that this investigation has been dealt with swiftly and resulted in a successful prosecution at Court today.”
