The spot was slapped with the worst rating available after tests found pollution in the water there
The water quality on a popular tourist
beach in Anglesey is the worst in Wales according to recent figures.
Cemaes beach was given a “poor” rating in quality tests carried out by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) after pollution was found in the water.
It is one of the 103 beaches in the country tested by NRW between May and September as part of the The Bathing Waters classifications.
Cllr William Hughes says he is “extremely shocked and surprised” to hear the results.
Cllr Hughes said: “We have to get to the bottom of this and we have to get it sorted as soon as possible – we need answers.
“I’m going to be pushing for answers and a written report on what has taken place on the beach and what they plan to do about it.
“We need to make sure something is done because we depend heavily on tourism and this sort of information is not very pleasant.”
All other beaches in Wales received an “excellent”, “good” or “sufficient” rating.
Emyr Roberts, Chief Executive of Natural Resources Wales, said: “One of our bathing waters has failed to meet the minimum standard this year.
“This is at Cemaes in Anglesey. We are disappointed with this failure."
'Extremely dissappointed'
“Pollution can come from a variety of sources – from sewerage systems to run-off from agricultural and urban areas.”
NRW and Anglesey County Council are now investigating alongside Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water to identify the possible source of the pollution and say they will continue to work to improve the water quality to bring it back up to the required standard.
An Isle of Anglesey County Council spokesperson said, “We’re naturally extremely disappointed that Cemaes has fallen short of the standards expected in terms of bathing water quality.
“We’ve made substantial investment in the harbour area in recent years with EU funding allowing us to provide new toilets; car park and harbour viewing area.
“As of May 2017, the county council will be undertaking its statutory duty of erecting signage around the beach area to advise members of the public against bathing there.
“We’ll continue to assist Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru to resolve this matter and improve bathing water quality standards at Cemaes.”
