He appeared at Swansea Youth Court, where Abul Hussain, prosecuting, said the teen had told his victim that he could knock him out.
He said the victim was asked to leave, when the teen: "Lunged over his mother with what is believed to be a knife in his hand, and stabbed him in the shoulder.
"He was taken to Morriston Hospital where he underwent surgery and the wound was treated."
An impact statement was read to the court, in which the teen's victim said he had initially tried to protect his attacker by not reporting the incident to the police, and added: "This was a totally unprovoked attack on me. I had never met him before and had no issue.
"All I did was tell him off because of how he was treating his mother".
Mitigating, Mike Spring said: "This incident should never have happened.
"It was a combination of the defendant's behaviour, and possible lack of parental control exercised at the time, and he had been drinking.
"A lot of people could not remember what had happened.
"The defendant has been very fortunate by just how wrong this could have gone. Because he was intoxicated he could have stabbed him anywhere on the body. It was very lucky he hit him where it did".
The court was told the teen, who lives in the Port Talbot area, had never appeared before the court before, and that 'his upbringing 'had been far from ideal and he has been a casualty of that'.
The teen had pleaded guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm.
Sentencing, chair of magistrates Julie Mallinson said: "This is a serious offence we are dealing with.
"Your victim suffered a serious injury. You have said and those supporting you have said you accept it could have been worse, and your are lucky that it was not.
"The [youth offending team pre-sentence] report outlines incredible difficulty circumstances in your life, and poor examples of adults in your life, who should have been guiding and protecting you".
He was made subject to an intensive referral order with a curfew.
