Cardiff council provoked controversy by asking residents to clear up leaves on their street
A driver who tested positive for cocaine has been jailed after leading police on a chase which reached speeds of 78mph and which lasted seven minutes.
John Paul Jones, 27, was pulled over by police in Brynhyfryd, Caerphilly, in June for a routine check.
But when officers approached Jones’ vehicle he sped off – and only stopped when his car became wedged in a footpath tunnel underneath a railway bridge.
Gwent Police said Jones, of Cilfynydd Road, Cilfynydd, Pontypridd, had displayed “sheer recklessness” and had put himself, other drivers, and police officers at risk.
Chase "drew to a close in a moment of sheer recklessness and stupidity"
According to a statement from the force the pursuit came to an end when the vehicle entered The Crescent in Caerphilly and continued down the footpath underneath a railway bridge towards Churchill Park. The vehicle then got wedged in the tunnel and blocked the footpath.
Jones was handed an 18-month prison sentence by a Cardiff Crown Court judge for dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified, failure to provide a blood sample for analysis, and driving without insurance.
Gwent Police PC Matt Richley said: “He [drove] in such a manner that he not only put members of the public at risk but also himself, his passengers, and the police.
“The pursuit of John Paul Jones drew to a close in a moment of sheer recklessness and stupidity when he decided to drive down a footpath and get himself wedged in a railway tunnel.
“Upon arrest John Paul Jones provided a positive reading for cocaine.”
