Sin City Comics in Newport had £1,500 worth of items taken
This footage shows the moment burglars broke into a comic book store and made off with £1,500 worth of goods, also causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.
The CCTV filmed the incident in the early hours of Wednesday in which a charity box, power tools, key chains, belt buckles and other memorabilia were taken from Sin City Comics in Newport .
Shane Richard Jordan, owner of the Commercial Street shop, got back to the store on Wednesday morning and phoned the police within 15 minutes of discovering the damage and items taken.
He said around £1,500 worth of goods were taken, including a charity box with £40 inside, and the damage amounted to over £500.
“I’m heartbroken, disappointed, and feel very let down. It’s anger, rage and frustration too.
“All of the damage and everything that got taken I have got to pay for out of pocket. There’s no backup and it really affects my livelihood. It’s quite a horrible feeling.”
Despite the damage Shane, who said he has never been burgled before, was able to open part of the store and trade from 12pm.
The 31-year-old added: “I’ve worked in Newport for years and my previous workplace got broken into as well.
“But that was four or five years ago – I thought things had changed but it seems not.
“What sort of world are we living in when people are breaking into small local businesses? All we are trying to do is pump money back into the local economy.
“In a city that people moan about and they say ‘it’s this that and the other’ about and you try to bring something new and something fresh and someone wants to come in and ruin it.”
Shane, who opened the store in August after running a smaller unit in Cwmbran , which he had for a year and a half, added: “Everyone slates Newport and it’s got a bad reputation but we believe it has potential of going places.”
Shane said his focus now was on the festive period as well as pumping money into making the shop more secure.
He added: “It’s just about looking forward now and hoping it’s going to be a good Christmas.”
A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to reports of a burglary at Sin City Comics, Newport, that happened sometime overnight on November 23.
“Belt buckles, key rings and power tools were stolen and an investigation to find those responsible is ongoing.
“If anyone has any information regarding this incident please call 101 quoting log 154 23/11/16.”
