A community leader says he hopes police and agencies dealing with serious anti-social behaviour in one part of Wrexham will not offer a quick fix and walk away.
County Cllr Steve Wilson says dealing with homeless people, drug users and alcoholics requires a long term plan and not a blitz.
His remarks came at a meeting of Rhosddu Community Council and follows two well- attended public meetings organised by residents and attended by North Wales chief constable Mark Polin and police and crime commissioner Arfon Jones
Cllr Wilson said he has already heard residents say they have never seen so many police officers in Rhosddu since the meetings.
“My fear is there might be a blitz and then police and agencies involved will walk away,” he said.
“The problems in Rhosddu reflect on both the King Street bus station area and Wrexham town centre and what is needed is a long-term strategic plan with Wrexham Council, police and the agencies all working together. We owe this to our residents.”
Cllr Wilson added: “The meetings were very productive and the residents certainly let the officials know the exact problems they have had to put up with.
“I am sure the police officials will also have gone away now knowing what must be done and will come up with a plan.”
Councillors have complained bitterly that one of the main reasons for the anti-social behaviour is that too many agencies dealing with those involved are all in the same area – Rhosddu.
While there is some sympathy with the homeless, residents say they should not have to be intimidated so much by all those who are drug dealing and have problems with alcohol.
Cllr Wilson, who represents the Grosvenor ward on Rhosddu Community Council, was successful in getting the council to buy a mobile CCTV which can be moved to any ‘hot spot’ in the area.
He also arranged for an improved street lighting system on the footpath from Gerald Street to Wrexham train station which some residents have boycotted using because of the risk of anti-social behaviour there.
