“It’s despicable what has happened and I feel very bad about it as these charities need every penny they can get"
Three charity collection boxes, including one for the Poppy Appeal, were stolen from a post office in the space of three days.
Two charity boxes, belonging to Tŷ Gobaith and St David’s Hospice , were stolen from Deganwy Post Office on the morning of Monday November 7.
The Poppy Appeal box was taken last Thursday morning – and it was thought to have been nearly full.
Deganwy Post Office owner John McEwen, who has ran the business with his wife for two years, said: “It’s despicable what has happened and I feel very bad about it as these charities need every penny they can get.
“This sort of thing has never happened before so it has come as a shock.
“On the Monday this scruffy down-and-out bloke distracted me by saying he wanted a cup of coffee so when I turned my back to make it he and the charity boxes had gone.”
The 81-year-old added: “And then on the Thursday it was my wife that noticed the Royal British Legion tin had gone.
“When I thought about it another rather scruffy man had asked for painkillers which meant I had to turn my back again.”
Mr McEwen said the Post Office will continue to have charity boxes but staff will be more vigilant.
West Conwy Coastal Police Inspector Kelly Isaacs said: “It is shameful that anyone could steal from charities.
“One of the boxes belonged to the Royal British Legion which has extra poignancy at this time of year.
“We are conducting a full investigation into this matter, and are putting on extra patrols to provide assurance.
“We are seeking help from the public to find a white male, in his 50s, wearing a grey or black overcoat, in

connection with the incidents.”
Inspector Isaacs added: “Even for a criminal, stealing charity boxes is considered lowest of the low.”
