A 12-YEAR-OLD girl is being interviewed by police after allegedly taking a knife into school with her.
She is a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni in Fleur de Lys, near Blackwood and is being dealt with by the Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly Youth Offending Service.
The service works with youngsters involved in alleged criminal behaviour.
Wales Online have reported that the mum of a fellow pupil had been told of a WhatsApp group –in which a group of youngsters, apparently from the school, discuss arming themselves with knives.
There are said to be images of knives among the messages.
The British Stainless Steel Association said one of the knives pictured was a kitchen knife of a grade characterised by "retention of blade sharpness" and "very high hardness".
Speaking to Wales Online the mum said: "We felt sick, absolutely sick [at the messages]. Parents need to know a knife was brought into the school."
Referring to the incident, a Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "Officers received information that a pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni in Fleur de Lys had taken a knife to school.
"Officers attended the school on November 8. The school had already recovered the knife after the pupil had attempted to dispose of [it].
"A 12-year-old girl was interviewed and referred to the youth offending service."
There has been no comment on the incident from the 1,500-pupil school, but a spokesperson for Caerphilly Local Education Authority said: "We are aware of this incident, and would reinforce the safety of our learners and staff remains of the utmost importance. We are content that the school responded swiftly and appropriately in addressing this issue.
"The individual concerned is currently suspended from school. The school, supported by the local authority, are working to put proportionate controls and appropriate support in place and continues to liaise with parents and colleagues from a number of agencies."
