Abergele mayor makes plea after victim in her 60s by teenager Jack Karl Thomas Williams who was jailed for 12 years
Jack Karl Thomas Williams was sentenced to 12 years’ detention for raping a woman at Pensarn beach
CCTV cameras must be installed on the seafront where a woman was brutally raped.
That is the call made by the mayor of Abergele after a woman in her sixties was attacked while walking her dog on Pensarn beach in August.
Earlier this month 19-year-old Jack Karl Thomas Williams was sentenced to 12 years’ detention after admitting three charges of rape, kidnapping and causing grievous bodily harm.
Williams, of Mount Road, Rhyl, was said to have been high on drugs and alcohol when he carried out the attack which left his victim severely traumatised.
The area where the incident occurred is alongside the coastal path and is extremely popular with dog-walkers.
It was there that serial killer Peter Moore murdered his final victim, crematorium worker Anthony Davies, in 1995.
Abergele mayor John McLennan, said the recent incident had highlighted the need for a CCTV camera giving 360-degree coverage of the area.
Fellow councillors have supported the idea and talks are now being held with Conwy County Borough Council, which operates 115 cameras throughout the county, monitored 24 hours a day.
At present there is only one camera in Pensarn close to the sliproad off the A55 but it does not cover the area to the north of the railway, including the seafront.
Cllr McLennan said that single camera at present was provided after Anthony Davies’s death in December 1995.
“We really need a camera to the north of the railway line because there have been numerous assaults in that area,” he said.
“This latest attack on the woman was horrific and a camera might act as a deterrent.
“Talks are ongoing with Conwy and it shouldn’t be too difficult to carry out,” he added.
