When Ashley Dawe was caught he told police: 'I stabbed her loads of places, bro. I would do it over and over again'
A jealous boyfriend knifed his girlfriend nine times in an attack that left blood spattered up the windows of her flat when she admitted kissing another man.
Furious Ashley Dawe was in bed with Melissa Parr when he asked her about seeing other men, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
After Miss Parr said she had kissed another man Dawe, 23, jumped out of bed and and kicked her in the head before going downstairs to the kitchen, grabbing a knife, returning upstairs, sitting on her legs, and repeatedly stabbing her.
Neighbours heard screams coming from Miss Parr’s flat in Cardiff and saw blood on the windows before alerting police.
Dawe has several convictions for violence including assaulting Miss Parr and attacking other former partners with a knife and table leg.
The court heard Dawe and Miss Parr had been in a relationship for almost 12 months when he attacked her on the morning of February 19 this year.
'Thought she was going to die'
Prosecutor Michael Jones said: “The defendant deliberately, gratuitously, and violently assaulted her, stabbing her repeatedly with a knife.
“The defendant was asking her questions about whether or not she had been with other men. She did say she had kissed somebody else and that was the trigger.
“The defendant took a knife from the kitchen and sat next to her on the bed. He asked her again how many men she had been with. He was sitting on her legs and jabbed her with the knife.
“She thought she was going to die. The neighbour describes her top being covered in blood and she was crying hysterically.”
Miss Parr was taken to hospital and doctors found she had suffered two “significant” stab wounds to her chest and abdomen, although they did not require surgery.
She also suffered other stab wounds to her lower body as well as defence wounds and cuts to her head and face.
'I am a murderer'
The court heard that the attack has had a profound effect on Miss Parr.
“Ashley has changed my life in every possible way. I want the judge to know that Ashley has taken years off me,” she said in a victim impact statement read to the court.
Dawe fled the scene and was arrested a short time later.
He later told police: “I stabbed her loads of places, bro. I would do it over and over again.
“I can’t help the way my brain works. I am not supposed to be here. I am a murderer, I don’t give a f***.”
Dawe, of no fixed address, was due to stand trial accused of attempted murder but pleaded guilty to the less serious charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Ruth Smith, defending, said Dawe had a very difficult childhood having been removed from his family home and placed into care before turning to drugs in his teenage years.
“Two psychiatrists agree that he has an emotionally unstable personality disorder which results from the experiences in his childhood, which was abusive,” she said.
“He is a young man who was failed by his parents and the care system. He has struggled with the belief that he could have committed this act. He does bitterly regret the offence upon a lady who for a long while was his partner.”
Judge Eleri Rees, the Recorder of Cardiff, passed an extended 14-year sentence on Dawe, meaning he will serve nine years’ imprisonment and five years on parole.
“You had been in a relationship with Miss Parr since March 2015 and there was a history of domestic violence,” she said.
“This was a frenzied attack. She thought she was going to die and this was an horrendous attack upon her. She was stabbed nine times, with two wounds to her chest and abdomen causing particular concern.
“I am satisfied that you pose a significant risk to the public. There is a pattern of violence towards partners and your attitude to women in general.
“I have no doubt that you are dangerous and that a sentence for the protection of the public is necessary.”
