They set upon their victim as a crowd of up to 30 people looked on
Three men have been jailed for a total of 21 years for their parts in a knife and chain attack on a busy street.
Salim Saeed, Marwan Sulayman and Dana Ahmed set upon their victim as a crowd of up to 30 people looked on.
Saeed was the "leading light" of the assault on his former friend and housemate. Swansea Crown Court heard he had fallen out with the victim after said he disapproved of his involvement in drugs.
At around 6pm on August 9 last year Sulayman and Ahmed armed themselves with a knife and chain, and confronted the Afghani man on St Helen's Road in Swansea.
However their victim managed to get the chain off Ahmed and kept his would-be attackers at bay by swinging it at them.
But the court heard Sulayman then joined the attack, grabbing the victim from behind and holding him, then urging his co-defendants to "stab the b*****d".
Sulayman then lunged at the victim with a knife, causing injuries to his eyelid and forehead.
The court heard the incident was witnessed by a group of between 25 and 30 people who had gathered on the street.
Saeed, 25, of St James' Gardens, Swansea, Sulayman, 27, of High Street, Ammanford, and 27-year-old Ahmed — an Iraqi asylum-seeker living in the Sheffield area — had pleaded not guilty to wounding with intent but were found guilty following a trial.
Saeed has eight previous convictions for 16 offences, including for violence, drugs possession and motoring matters, while Sulayman has three convictions for five offences and Ahmed has two convictions for six offences.
The court heard Saeed is soon to be a father and would miss the birth of this child if her were sent to prison, while Sulayman was a businessman whose firm would be in jeopardy if he were jailed. Ahmed, who came to Britain in 2009, is awaiting the outcome of his asylum application.
Judge Peter Heywood said it had been a planned attack carried out with weapons on a busy street.
He said he had no doubt that Saeed had orchestrated the attack and was the "leading light" in the incident — but he added it was a "joint enterprise" involving the three of them.
Saeed was sentenced to seven years, and Sulayman and Ahmed to six-and-a-half years each.
